chandigarh: while many might view its location as a drawback, the owners of the gizeh, panchkula's latest discotheque with an egyptian theme, feel it's their biggest strength. it's spread across 2,600 sq ft, and the rectangular shape of the area (it's not box-like as we have in chandigarh) has allowed us to create corners and give an ambience, says deepak bhardwaj, the man running the show. moreover, there is ample space for parking and since the four owners (anoop, tarlochan, johny and rajinder), feel they have created a different look, the place should work. these days 10-12 km is nothing, says bhardwaj in defence of the location, when we cited las vegas den's movement from manimajra to sector 34. the biggest strength, however, could prove to be the fact that the company claims it would have a complete liquor license by end march. considering the fact that no discotheque has this facility, this could result in becoming gizeh's pulling power. till then customers will have to make do with soft drinks; dry snacks will also be permanent fixtures on the menu. the disco, in swastik vihar, will remain open 8 pm onwards on friday, saturday and sunday nights; and will also run in the afternoons on mondays and wednesdays. it will be open for private parties on tuesdays and thursdays. entry will only be for couples. they owners are very strict on this, says bhardwaj. stags are a no-no at all costs! the disco, which has cost upwards of rs 40 lakh to make, took about nine months to complete. says anoop, we all got together and decided to create something different as everyone gets bored with monotony and wants a change. no doubt the disco captures your attention. with large sphinx created in fibreglass, pop etc., the disco has an egyptian feel and even the artefacts created, the figures on glass panels, the brick walls (especially created in up), the ultraviolet colours, all add to its uniqueness. the disco has been created by architect achhar pal singh, who has also designed rodeo in delhi and j49 in mumbai, apart from aerizzona in chandigarh. we surfed the net for ideas, he says. sanjeev kaushal, in charge of the arts and artefacts says he watched discovery channel extensively, and visited libraries to look up egyptian pictures. lighting and sound are also state-of-the-art (this alone has cost rs 20 lakh) and have been executed by vijay sharma. as for music, a dj has been hired from mumbai who will cater to the needs of the disco-goers. the name is being kept a secret. the disco is readying for a grand launch on december 29 and has a special evening planned for the 31st. it has a capacity to accommodate 200 couples at one time.
